How to help the RVA community during the COVID-19 outbreak

How to help the RVA community during the COVID-19 outbreak

When life gives you lemons, just make lemonade!

This has always been a favorite quote of mine. Life is constantly changing and evolving, and I have always been amazed at those who are able to take the bad and turn it into something good. That’s one of the reasons we at the Scott Garnett Team are so involved with RVA and the RPS community.  Currently, RPS is having to deal with all of the complexities of shutting down schools, teaching remotely and feeding those in need. Restaurants are having to shut down or resort to takeout, and the hospitals and their employees are stretched to the limit.

But the RVA community, as they always do, is coming to the support of the schools, local businesses, and hospitals and turning what could be a tough situation, into an amazing show of support and love for all that’s amazing in our town. We are so proud to call Richmond our home and eager to help in any way that we can. If you are so inclined, feel free to donate your time or money to the variety of amazing causes below. It’s going to be a little while before we get back to normal, but once we do, we will be stronger and better for it. I look forward to enjoying a glass of lemonade with my neighbors in the near future!

1. Enable Richmond Public Schools Food Distribution
RPS Schools have closed their doors for the foreseeable future, leaving their 24,000+ students without a guaranteed source for lunchtime meals. Here are a few ways you can help provide meal assistance to our community:

Donate to Building A Better Richmond Public Schools (BBRPS)
BBRPS is a non-profit started by two members of our team and a few RPS teachers that are dedicated to improving the RPS system. The Scott Garnett Team is personally donating  $2,000 to BBRPS to help fund meals for RPS students in need. If you would like to donate, please visit the BBRPS website.

Buy From Ledbury Luxury Men’s Retailer
A local men’s clothing retailer, Ledbury, is also stepping up for this cause, donating a portion of the proceeds of their “Together Forward Sales Event” to BBRPS. They are currently offering 20%, 25%, and 30% off deals to help raise money for meal assistance through BBRPS.

Volunteer to Distribute Food at RPS Schools
Volunteers to distribute food are needed at food drives taking place at several RPS Schools. If you are healthy and interested in volunteering, sign up for a shift!

2. Donate Blood to the Red Cross
The American Red Cross is in need of blood donations. Over the past few weeks, 4,000 blood drives have been canceled across the United States, which has resulted in over 100,000 missed blood donations. This has put cancer patients, trauma victims, surgical patients, and mothers who have had complicated pregnancies at risk with a decreased available blood supply.
Please consider donating blood if you are healthy and willing to at your closest location. Learn about the benefits here.

3. Keep Calm and Nom Nom
With public health concerns surrounding the coronavirus hitting the food and beverage industry particularly hard, a local campaign is looking to help area restaurants and breweries stay afloat by bringing them revenue from a distance.

Keep Calm and Nom Nom is a resource that groups restaurants and breweries by neighborhood with links to their respective gift card webpages so you can buy now, and enjoy later. Many participating restaurants are also offering pickup/delivery options to make it even easier to support your local restaurants and breweries.

4. Take the Initiative – Help Medical Personnel and the Elderly
If you have a friend or family member working on the frontlines of medical care, reach out to them, listen to their frustrations, and offer to bring a meal.

If you have an elderly friend or family member, or a person in your life who is immunocompromised, offer to grocery shop for them to reduce their exposure. Many stores are still open, however, their hours are being modified to allow for sanitization.
